I had the privilege of meeting 3-day old chicks this week. I was captivated by their evolving social order. One baby was very bold. She walked right up to my hand inside the little warming pen, while the others ran in fear. Later, the lead chick - clearly the alpha chicken - urged others do what she wanted, and they dutifully complied. If you want to see hierarchy, watch a flock of hens! Even if they are tiny chicks barely out from the egg!

Cute babies.

wonderful little chicks...love the colours too!!!
ReplyDeleteAre you also birdies' fan. :))
ReplyDeleteMy Mom has had hens for years and I never noticed that. I will definitely be looking at them with a new eye from now on!!
ReplyDeleteLola,
ReplyDeleteyes, they are already establishing their pecking order. Actually I am wondering if the bold baby is a boy! This one is so fearless and bossy! :) Really fun to watch them.
beautiful image, nice story!
ReplyDeleteI wouldn't have thought that of freshly hatched chicks, but I guess since its present in every other creature, it would be with chicks too.
ReplyDeleteBeautiful picture!
